Without Mammoth to tip the balance of power in his favor, how will the landlord continue to exploit our protagonists?

The landlord, John-Cro, and Magnon are gathered together. The landlord: “Well, um... I've heard your complaints, and I've decided we need to find some common ground. We're not animals. Compromise is the key.”
John-Cro: “Isn't Mammoth here?” The landlord, embarrassed: “Uuum, he's around. He'll be back.” Magnon: “What's your compromise?”
The landlord: “Well, I've decided to lend you food for the winter, at a pretty damn good rate.” Magnon: “A rate?”
The landlord: “When the warm weather returns, you'll repay me for the food I've lent you +10%.” John-Cro: “So if you give us 10 squashes, we'll have to give you one more?” The landlord: “One more per month, yes.”
Magnon: “One per month? But then, in the end, that will be a lot more than 10%, won't it?” The landlord hands her a basket of vegetables: “Don't try to do math on an empty stomach, it's not healthy. Here.”
Later, John-Cro and Magnon are eating vegetables.
