Ep. 35. The grasshopper is not who you think it is

The most unrealistic thing about La Fontaine's fable is that the ant can keep the fruits of its labor...

John-Cro declares, as he walks on snow: “I'm now finding winter stinging / I have ceased in my song / Will my landlord be helping? Or will he do me wrong?”
John-Cro, in front of the landlord, who is sitting on a kind of throne, with lots of food behind him: “O, you're rich from my labor / And I've not a cent”
John-Cro continues: “Lend me a squash, and I vow I’ll return it / Tough as it is to pay you rent”
The landlord is unyielding and replies: “I am not a lender / I must confess / Pray, how passed you the summer? / That in winter you come to distress?”
John-Cro: “I worked through the summer / Mainly to pay your fees.”
The landlord replies: “So you worked? What a bummer / Well, now go and die, please.” Note: Comic strip licensed under CC BY SA (grisebouille.net), drawn on November 10, 2025 by Gee.
